As if we didn’t feel honoured and welcome enough after our awesome road trip, the Hart House Finnish Exchange (HHFE) organised an Alumni event at the beginning of June to kickstart our time in Toronto.
Tim had invited the Canadian HHFE alumni to come and meet the new Finnish group (that’s us!) and to our surprise and delight, there was at least one alumnus from each decade, reaching all the way to the first exchange back in 1951!
Organised in the University of Toronto (colloquially ”UofT”) downtown campus in the Hart House building, the cocktail event had a warm and anticipating atmosphere. The Canadians were eager to meet us and hear about our jobs and summer plans.
We held a small powerpoint presentation showing our experiences so far – what have we enjoyed and what we might miss from Finland. One alumnus from each decade gave a small speech or anecdote about their memories and we got a great glimpse of the history of the exchange! It is great to be a part of an exchange with such strong roots, that even now we get to hear stories from the first exchange back in -51, personally from a participant!
After the speeches we had some time to enjoy the delicious cocktail snacks and discuss with the participants about the past and the future and get to know them better.
Thank you to everyone who came to meet us!
